The Guess That Was Within 2 Letters (and Still Wrong)
Within 2 letters. The room erupts. Then… still wrong.
Closer on the map is not the same as closer in the alphabet. That near-miss is the whole lesson.
After one shared-screen round with the move below, your class will treat Within 2 as strategy, not luck.
What Within 2 is really saying
In Locabulary, closeness is about starting letters, not how near two countries sit on the map.
If the mystery country starts with M, a guess starting with K, L, or N can land in Within 2 letters. The places might be oceans apart. The alphabet is doing the work.
- Within 6 letters means you are in the neighbourhood of the alphabet, not the neighbourhood of the continent.
- Over 6 away means the starting letter is a long hop from the target. Time to pick a different letter from the current country name and try again.
Once kids feel that in their bones, the game stops being random shouting and starts being a tiny bit of strategy.
Do this in 30 seconds
When a Within 2 guess misses, do not rush the next suggestion. Ask one question out loud:
“Close in letters. Where is that country on the map compared to where we think we are heading?”
You will hear map talk: “That’s in Africa but we keep landing in Europe names,” or “We need a letter nearer to M.” That is geography and language overlapping without a worksheet.
Same energy for Over 6 away. Celebrate it. It is information. It tells the class which letter paths are cold so the next turn can pivot.
Why it sticks
Teachers who only describe Locabulary as “a fun five-minute puzzle” undersell the sticky bit. The sticky bit is the near-miss: wrong country, useful clue, class leaning in.
Try one shared-screen round with that lens. Project the puzzle. Let students suggest. When Within 2 appears and it is still wrong, linger. That is the lesson hiding inside the play.
